Elmer Barnes Obituary

A limb has fallen from the Barnes Family Tree.  The patriarch Elmer Barnes, 87, widower of Agnes Johns Barnes, passed away on Saturday April 2, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was a native of Madison County Kentucky born April 21,1934, to the late James Edward and Virgie Howard Barnes. Elmer was one of 11 children in their family.  He retired from the US Army as a Drill Sargent and served in Vietnam and became a truck driver for Carty & Carty. Elmer was of the Baptist faith, loved to rebuild antique cars, remodel old houses and was a workaholic kind of man with strict rules coming from his days in the Service.  He is survived by his children Frances Lee Stokley, husband Ernest, Connie Van Dyke, husband Bill, and Jeffrey Barnes, wife Tammy, as well as his 13 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and numerous great-great grandchildren. Memories of his childhood will remain with  his brothers Tom Barnes, Marion Barnes, and Adrian Johns, and sisters Anna Katherine Barnes and Louise Barnes.  He was preceded in death by 5 brothers and sisters, daughter Marcella Barnes and  son David Allen Barnes.  A Service of Remembrance will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday April 6, at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home with Rev. Lonnie Moore officiating. Following he will be laid to rest with Military Honors  beside his wife in Bluegrass Memorial Gardens.  Honoring him as pallbearers will be Travis and Andrew Sparrow, Jacob Laber, Ethan Bumgardner,  and Christopher Barnes.  The family will receive friends beginning at 12:00 noon until time of service at 1:00 PM  The family suggest contributions be made to the American Legion Post 63 Honor Guard; 129 Forest Gate Rd, Lexington KY 40515.  “Many people will walk in and out of your life, but friends will leave  footprints on your heart.”  Hager & Cundiff values the trust and loyalty given to us by the family of Elmer Barnes
