David McMillen Obituary

A limb has fallen from the McMillen family tree.  David Lee McMillen, 90, widower of Dorothy McMillen since 2006, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, Jan. 10 at Baptist Health.  A native of Wilmore, KY he was born on Sept. 25, 1928, to the late Ollie Clay and Lela Grow McMillen, one of their four children. He was a member of Wilmore Presbyterian Church and life-long farmer.  His love for animals did not stop at his precious dogs and cattle but included many others.  He was well-known for being able to lay rock fences better than any Irishman. David was a people person, always willing to help a person in need, and extended his love of gardening and his abundance of vegetables not only to his family but to community members as well.  He was a kind and gentle man who was well liked, and all his life had a good sense of humor—even about himself.  His main pleasure was spending time with his family.  He loved sharing his knowledge of farming and raising a garden with his children and grandchildren.  He has left his legacy with daughter Connie Bandy, husband Michael and son Joseph Timothy “Tim” McMillen, wife Bari Kay, grandchildren Alyson Merrell, husband David, Christopher Bandy, Timberly McMillen Kidwell, husband Curt, step grandchild Stephanie Barron, husband Ben, great grandchildren Micah, McKayla, Elijah Kidwell and Matthew David Merrell, and 2 step great grandchildren Stephen and David.  He leaves fond memories with a sister, Jane Woodard and sister-in-law  Jean McMillen, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and his many friends.  He was preceded in death by sons David Dana and Michael “Mike” Alexander McMillen and two brothers, Harrison and Samuel McMillen.  A Remembrance Service will be 1:00 PM Monday, Jan. 14, at Wilmore Free Methodist Church, where the family will also greet friends beginning at 11:00 AM before the Service.  He will be laid to rest beside his wife in the Versailles Cemetery following the Service.  Honoring him as pallbearers will be Charles Hahn, Dave Merrell, Chris Bandy, Curt Kidwell, Danny Hogue, Danny Eades, and Granville “Rip” Woodard III.  The family will also greet friends at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home on Sunday, Jan. 13, starting at 1:00 PM and ending at 5:00 PM.  Flowers are welcome but the family suggest donations be made to Wilmore Presbyterian Church or Bluegrass Care Navigators in his memory.    “Grieve not for me, remember the best times, the laughter, and the good life I lived while I was strong”.  Hager & Cundiff is honored to be chosen to care for the McMillen family.
