Betty Sivis Davis Obituary

Betty James Maxey Sivis Davis of Nicholasville, was born January 20,1929 and passed to eternal resurrection on September 13, 2021.  Betty was the wife of William Thomas Davis and widow of Reverend Edward Everett Sivis.  She was preceded in death by parents, Earl Thomas Maxey and Mary D. Capps Maxey of Owingsville, Kentucky.  Betty is survived by her son Reverend Larry B. Sivis and wife Debbie of Ashland and daughter Janet Sivis-O’Connell of Nicholasville.  Her beloved grandchildren are Reverend Betty Sivis of Ashland, Collin Everett Sivis O’Connell and Cherish O’Connell of Richmond, Curren Edward Sivis O’Connell of Illinois, and Lacey Hylen of Rhode Island.

Betty began her working career as a 13 year old pianist at Mt. Pleasant Methodist in Bath County, KY.  She graduated from Owingsville High School in 1946 and from the University of Kentucky in 1950 with a BS degree in Home Economics. She began her teaching career as Nicholasville High School Home Economics teacher.  She was Jessamine County 4-H Extension Agent for several years.

Betty was a multi-talented person as well as a natural leader, both of which are reflected in her many work and faith based volunteer positions.  She was a historic interpreter at Conner Prairie Historic Village, Noblesville, IN; at Waveland State Site, Lexington where she also served as hostess; William Whitley State Historic State Historic Site, Stanford; and Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, Harrodsburg.

A dedicated volunteer, Betty was in Eastern Star in both Kentucky and Alabama.  She was a Cabinet member and then President of Alabama Christian Women’s Fellowship, Alabama Regional Board of Christian Churches (Disciples of Christ) member, Alabama Church Women United President, and Selma, Alabama Music Study Club President.  In Kentucky, Betty was President of Kentucky Church Women United, Christian Women Fellowship Regional Board, and Jessamine Women’s Club.  She was Indiana Christian Women United President and active in Indiana Lioness. 

Along with three other women of Nicholasville Christian congregation (Tabor Risk, Jackie West, and Eileen Matthews), Betty was a founder of Jessamine County Hospice.  

Betty was a member and Elder of the Nicholasville Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), a faithful member of the Chancel Choir, the founder of CWF Circle 6 and member of CWF Circle 4.  She was a favorite Sunday School teacher of several young adult and college age classes.

The Elders of Nicholasville Christian Church (Anna and Bobby Day Wilson, Janet Sivis-O’Connell, Terry McFarland, Kelley and Fred Burczyk, Carol Silvey, Gary Denton, Willie McCuddy, Bob Damron, Susan Braden, and Bob Ball) are honored to serve as pallbearers and the Deacons as honorary pallbearers.  The memorial service will be Saturday, September 18th, at 11:00 with visitation preceding at 9:00, Nicholasville Christian Church (Disciples of Christ); Rev. Lon Oliver, officiating. Graveside service will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery with Reverend Larry Sivis, officiating.

The family requests wearing masks and observing social distancing.
