Shirley Claudine Burton Profile Photo

Shirley C. Burton, 84, widow of Douglas Brown Burton, joined her husband on Father’s Day, June 21, in eternal rest.  She was a native of Bristol, Tennessee, born Oct. 6, 1935.  She was a Safety Inspector for Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company and also for Hospital Specialty.  Shirley will be greatly missed by those who traveled on North Second Street as she always sat on her front porch at the corner of Second and Walnut to greet those people with a friendly wave.  She is survived by her loving children Margaret Sims, husband Gary, Robert James Thomas, Jr., Debbie Lawson, husband Ernie, Harold Thomas, and Tammy Atkins, husband Lee, as well as 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a sister Phyllis Jean Miller, grandson John Henry Thomas, and granddaughter Anjelica Dawn Sezrpici.  A Remembrance Service will be held Thursday, June 25, at 11:00 AM with her grandsons serving as Honorary Pallbearers. The Service will be live-streamed on the Hager & Cundiff Face Book page and YouTube page. Following the service as she requested cremation will take place. She and her husband Doug will be laid to rest in Maple Grove Cemetery at a later date.  Her family will greet friends from 4 to 8 PM on Wednesday June 24, at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home.   “ A hummingbird flits around us for a brief moment, and though we wish it could stay, when it flies off, we feel blessed to have seen it.”

Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home values nothing more than the trust given to us by Shirley and her family to care for them.
