Roger Dale Smith, age 70, passed peacefully at his home in Wilmore, Kentucky on Thursday April 30, 2026, after battling a brain bled for two months. Roger was born in Lexington, Kentucky on October 15, 1955 to the late William and Emma Smith. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Lou Smith, son Roger William Smith, daughter-in -law Tammy (John) McQueary, grandsons Tyler and Damon Smith, brother George Edward Carroll, sisters Elizabeth Joseph, Stella (Sue) Schagane, and Della (Peanut) Smith. He also leaves behind three step-sons Wyatt (Tasha) Wilson, Donny Wilson, and Doug (Candy) Wilson, step-grandchildren James, Blake, Jaisa, Jae, Steele, Rocco, and Phoenix Wilson, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Roger is preceded in death by his son Brian David Smith, and brothers Frank and Wesley Carroll.

A devoted family man and loyal friend, Roger’s easy manner and dependable nature were a source of comfort for all of those lucky enough to know him. A life-long Christian, Roger was a valued member of East Hickman Baptist Church for thirty years. He worked as a mechanic for Equipment Depot (formerly Portman Equipment) for 32 years until his retirement in 2020. Roger found great joy in the outdoors, Nascar, and music. He also loved riding motorcycles with his wife and friends, on trips both near and far. Words cannot describe the void that has been left in our family, and hearts.

His wife, Mary Lou Smith, will be hosting a Celebration of Life at the farm she and Roger have loved for so many years. Please join her on May 8, 2026, 2:00pm at 820 Grows Mill, Wilmore, KY. Everyone is welcome. If you would like to honor Roger’s passions in life, please wear a Harley Davidson, Nascar, Country music or Classic Rock t-shirt.

Honorary Pallbearers are Ernie Smith, David Sponcil, Lowell Martin, Dan Beglau, John Locknane, Wayne Sewell, Todd Schell and George Ed Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Camp Shelby, 6418 Tates Creek Road, Lexington, KY 40515.

“How lucky we are to have someone that makes saying goodbye so hard”. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home & Cremations and we extend our heartfelt sympathy to Roger’s family and friends.
