Nancy Gwendolyn “Gwen” Owen, 91, of Nicholasville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on the morning of April 6, 2026.
Born on January 20, 1935, in Arlington, Kentucky, Gwen was the cherished daughter of Anna Bess Carter Owen and John Edward Owen. From an early age, she carried a deep love for God, a steadfast faith that guided her life, and a heart that overflowed with kindness.
Gwen’s life was a beautiful reflection of faith, family, and service. She is survived by her children, Paul (Tina) Cooley and Brenda (Chris) Hall, grandchildren, John “JD” Cooley and Clara Cooley, siblings, John Edward (Pat) Owen Jr., Madeline (Bob) Farmer, and Robert Owen. She is also survived by her dearest friend of 50 years, Bobbie Edwards, with whom she shared countless adventures and memories.
She had a lifelong passion for children and education. Gwen completed her bachelor’s in physical education at Murray State University and earned her master’s degree in physical education from Eastern Kentucky University. She began her teaching career in Downers Grove, Illinois, took time off to start a family and resumed teaching in 1973 at Nicholasville Elementary School and retired in 2006 from the Jessamine Early Learning Village, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students.
Gwen loved staying active and enjoyed sports throughout her life, especially golf, softball, bowling, and basketball. She continued bowling well into her 80s. She was also an enthusiastic fan of University of Kentucky women’s basketball.
A devoted member of Nicholasville Methodist Church since moving to the community in August 1968, Gwen served faithfully in numerous leadership roles. She was especially passionate about the Sunday School program and the Manna ministry, which helped provide food to those in need. She also worked closely with church trustees during the construction of the new building—earning the affectionate nickname of their “daily hard hat.”
Even in her final months at Cedarhurst Assisted Living, Gwen never lost her joy for life. She formed meaningful friendships and found special joy in being cared for by some of her former students whose lives she had touched years before.
A celebration of Gwen’s life will be held at Nicholasville Methodist Church on Sunday, April 19, at 3:00 PM, with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM.
Her journey on earth is complete, and she now rejoices in the presence of the Lord she faithfully served.
