John Peter Ward, Jr. Obituary

Our community has lost one of our members, Jack Ward, 9l, on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018,  who will always be remembered by many, not only here but those who traveled through our Main Street, for his devotion to the Bakery that was started by his father in 1927.  Many have spoken of Ward’s Bakery as a landmark in their travels and for those of us who had the opportunity to enjoy the specialities made there, we say, “Thank You, Jack, you are missed.”  Jack was  the loving husband for 71 years to Madeline C. Wurtenberger Ward, who was also a fixture at the Bakery until their retirement in 1985.  Jack was born John Peter Ward, Jr. in Nicholasville, one of 5 children of the late John Peter, Sr. and Florence Ward.  He was a graduate of the Lexington Latin School,  member of St. Luke Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.  In addition to his wife, he leaves to cherish his memories a sister Charlotte Gallagher, nieces and nephews Cheryl Ward, Michael Ward, Mary Russo, Vera Braswell, Madeline Mitchell, Bernard Gallagher,  John Gallagher, Ken Wurtenberger, David Wurtenberger, Ann Adkins, Jody Wurtenberger, Martha Barnes, and Amy Beck as well as a host of friends.  He was preceded in death by brothers George, Charles, and Norbert Ward, and niece Mary. A  Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 AM Thursday, Oct. 11, in St. Luke Catholic Church and Jack will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery . Honoring him as pallbearers are Jody Wurtenberger, Jo White, Ken Wurtenberger, Kevin Barnes, George Beck, and Mick Ward.  The family will greet friends at Hager & Cundiff Funeral Home Wednesday, Oct 10, beginning at 4:00 PM and ending at 8:00 PM  with a  Recitation of the Rosary to be held at 7:30 PM.  “ What the heart has once known, it shall never forget”.  Hager & Cundiff is honored to serve Jack’s family.
